What are the Benefits of Salt Water Pools?

Unlike traditional chlorine pools, saltwater pools use advanced technology to naturally create chlorine from salt. This ensures continued pool sanitation without the use of chemical additives. At Orange Pools, we use an innovative approach to design saltwater pools that offer a gentler swimming experience, especially for individuals with sensitive skin. No more itchy skin, red eyes, or harsh chemical smell.

Our team designs saltwater pools that use a salt cell to convert dissolved salt into pure, natural chlorine. This process is known as electrolysis. Most traditional pools require frequent addition of chlorine liquids or tablets. On the other hand, salt systems automatically maintain optimal and consistent chlorine levels. The result is a saltwater system that stays clean. Here are the benefits of saltwater pools.

  • Reduced Maintenance Saltwater pools automate the chlorine production process through a salt chlorination cell, which helps maintain steady hygiene levels. This reduces the need for constant manual chemical additions to the pool. While routine testing is still required, pool owners don’t require frequent chemical additions. The system also minimizes strong chlorine fluctuations that can affect water balance and comfort.
  • Environmentally Friendly Pools Saltwater systems generally use less synthetic chlorine and other harsh chemicals than traditional chlorine pools. Since natural chlorine is generated on-site through electrolysis, you don’t need chlorine storage and transportation of chemical containers. Fewer chemicals means less carbon footprint. This can reduce chemical waste and streamline sanitation while keeping your pool environmentally friendly.
  • Cost-Effective Operation Although installing a saltwater system requires a significant upfront investment, long-term operating costs are often lower. Traditional chlorine pools require regular purchases of tablets or liquid chlorine. Salt systems rely primarily on salt replenishment and salt cell maintenance, which can reduce ongoing chemical expenses over time. This reduces the overall cost of saltwater pool maintenance.
  • Soft Water Feel Saltwater pools are known for their smooth water texture. The dissolved salt concentration is mild, but it creates a softer feel on the skin. Many swimmers report reduced irritation on their skin and eyes or less dryness compared to traditional chlorine pools. Toronto homeowners can rely on Orange Pools to install a luxury saltwater pool in their backyards. Schedule a free consultation and speak to an expert.

What Equipment is Needed for Salt Water Pools in Toronto?

Your saltwater system requires energy-efficient equipment to maintain safe and crystal clear water in your pool. Our team will recommend top-tier pool equipment and salt chlorine generators to ensure your pool stays chlorine-free. Here’s the core equipment you need for your saltwater pool.

  • Salt Chlorine Generator The salt chlorine generator powers the electrolysis process that converts dissolved salt into natural chlorine. It maintains steady pool sanitizer levels and reduces manual chemical handling.
  • Pool Pump A properly sized pool pump ensures consistent circulation and supports the salt system’s performance. Our team recommends variable-speed pumps for improved efficiency and energy control.
  • Filtration Systems High-capacity filtration systems remove debris and maintain balanced water chemistry. Proper filtration supports proper chlorine distribution and helps keep the pool water clear and stable.
  • Smart Control Systems Smart automation systems monitor chlorine levels, pump speed, and heating cycles. They simplify ongoing maintenance and allow remote system adjustments when needed.
  • Pool Heater & Insulated Cover A pool heater combined with an insulated cover helps extend your swimming season beyond summer. Efficient heating maintains comfortable pool water temperatures while reducing heat loss.
  • LED Lighting System LED lighting enhances pool visibility and evening ambience, especially at night. Energy-efficient fixtures provide safe illumination while complementing your pool’s overall design.

Common Questions.

You have questions - we have answers.

  • Do saltwater pools have chlorine?

Yes. A saltwater pool is still a chlorine pool. The difference is how chlorine gets into the water. A salt chlorine generator uses electrolysis to convert dissolved salt (sodium chloride) into free chlorine within the system, so you add far fewer, or even none, chlorine tablets or liquid doses. This helps keep sanitizer levels steadier when the system is correctly sized and maintained

  • How does a salt chlorine generator work?

Water passes through a salt cell that applies an electrical charge. The electrolysis process separates the salt components and produces chlorine, which sanitizes the pool. After it reacts with contaminants, the chemistry cycles back toward salt, so the system keeps producing chlorine as long as the salt level, flow, and water balance are within the recommended levels.

  • What salt level is recommended for saltwater pools?

Most salt systems operate at 2,500-4,000 ppm of salt. The exact salt level of your pool depends on your specific chlorinator model. Too little salt reduces chlorine production. Too much salt can trigger system warnings and may stress equipment. Always follow the generator’s manual after testing the water.

  • Are saltwater pools better for sensitive skin and eyes?

Many swimmers find that saltwater pools feel gentler because chlorine levels are often more consistent and the water feels “softer.” However, saltwater pools still contain chlorine, and irritation can still occur if the pH or chlorine levels are out of balance. The comfort difference comes from stable chemistry and fewer large chlorine swings. Remember, the saltiness in these pools is barely noticeable to swimmers.

  • Is a saltwater pool cheaper to run than a traditional chlorine pool?

Operating costs can be lower over time because you typically buy fewer chlorine products. The tradeoff is equipment cost and maintenance. Salt cells wear out, need cleaning (due to scale buildup), and eventually need replacement. Most homeowners in Toronto choose Orange Pools for proper saltwater pool maintenance.

  • Can I convert an existing chlorine pool into a saltwater pool?

Yes. At Orange Pools, we can retrofit your existing choline pool within one to two days. We have extensive experience converting existing pools into luxurious outdoor environments that promote relaxation and safety. Note that your kids and the entire family can use the converted pool.

  • Do saltwater pools damage concrete, stone, or metal around the pool?

Salt can contribute to corrosion or surface wear when water splashes out and evaporates, leaving salt behind. The risk of corrosion depends on material choice, sealing, drainage, and how well you maintain water chemistry. Using appropriate coping/deck materials, sealing vulnerable surfaces, and managing splash-out help reduce long-term issues, especially in saltwater pools that are used frequently.

  • Can you use a saltwater system with vinyl, fiberglass, ICF, or concrete pools?

Yes. Salt chlorine generators can be used with most pool types. The key is to ensure correct system sizing, compatible equipment, and balanced water chemistry. For example, heaters and metal components should be selected carefully to reduce corrosion risk. Work with our team to choose components that don’t rust quickly.

  • How do you winterize a saltwater pool in Toronto’s climate?

In freezing conditions, winterizing usually includes turning off the salt system, lowering the water level as needed, draining lines, and protecting the salt cell from freeze damage. Contact us whenever you need a professional to winterize your saltwater pool in Toronto.

  • Are saltwater pools safe, and how salty are they compared to the ocean?

Yes, when maintained properly, saltwater pools are safe. Pool salinity is much lower than seawater salinity. In fact, pool salt levels are ten times lower than those of ocean water, which is around 35,000 ppm. Remember, you should avoid swallowing pool water when swimming. It’s also important to maintain the recommended sanitizer and pH levels for swimmers' comfort and hygiene.
